From the Register Guard-newspaper:
South Eugene and Sheldon kicked off the post-spring break track and field season Friday, and in typical Oregon fashion, the rain started just in time.
The nearly constant showers didn’t dampen any of the enthusiasm as both the Irish and Axemen laid the first building blocks for what they hope are successful seasons.
For the Irish, jumper Geneva Lehnert won the high jump and finished second in the long jump. Lehnert has enjoyed a fast start to the spring, thanks to a hard offseason preparing. She jumped at an indoor meet at the University of Washington in February and set a personal-best of 5-feet, 7-inches in the high jump. Then in Sheldon’s first meet of the outdoor season March 18 she set a personal record in the long jump at 18-2 — tops in the state so far this season.
Lehnert said she could still take positives from Friday’s relatively low jump of 5-2.
The Irish could have the makings of a dynamic jumping duo in Lehnert and Lauren Clay, who won the long jump, triple jump and 100 Friday. Clay is currently fourth in the state in the 100, third in the long jump and second in the triple jump.
In the throws, Emma Peters swept the shot put, discus and javelin for the Irish.
Sheldon coach Erin Regali said with 150 competitors out for track this season, the coaching staff is still trying to figure out where kids are at. The Irish host North Medford next Wednesday then Sheldon will start traveling to higher profile meets like the Oregon Relays in two weeks.
“Now the schedule really starts getting into high gear,” she said.
The Sheldon girls won the team scoring 113-31, and the Irish boys won 88-56.
