“It was kind of a tough race against really good competitors,” Gracie Todd said of helping Sheldon to a second-place team finish. “I feel like it’s not my best but I feel like I did my best for today.

Around the 2-kilometer mark of the boys race, Jackson Mestler said the hot weather got to him, creating some cotton mouth, but he was able to add distance to his late surge and hold off West Salem’s Ahmed Muhumed by four seconds.

“It’s a great start actually,” Mestler said. “It’s kind of nice to get an early season preview of some other good teams.”
